Friday, May 3, 2024, the day before, saw Steveson’s formal contract release.

A few weeks later, on September 4, he inked a contract with WWE after making a fleeting appearance at the company’s SummerSlam event on August 21, 2021.

Steveson was hired on a full-time basis by NXT after his backstage appearance on an episode of NXT: Gold Rush on June 20, 2023.

He competed in his first match at NXT The Great American Bash against Baron Corbin; the match ended in no contest after the two hurled each other over the announcers’ desk.

When Corbin emerged as the “heel,” or “villain,” of the encounter, both spectators and fans turned against Steveson.

Steveson’s NXT roster was cleared out in September of 2023.

On January 5, 2024, he returned for a short while and defeated Cedric Alexander at SmackDown: New Year’s Resolution.

Sadly, the victory did not persuade WWE executives that Steveson ought to stay associated with the company.

He and the other eleven wrestlers released from their contracts, which included:

  • Boa
  • Julian Baldi
  • Ezekiel Balogun
  • Emma Maria Diaz
  • Valentina Feroz
  • Trey Bearhill
  • Kiyah Saint
  • Keyshawn Leflore
  • Drew Gulak
  • Darrell Mason
  • Vlad Pavienko

Since Steveson had only appeared in one poorly regarded televised match, some fans were naturally taken aback by his release.

“Didn’t see this coming! Gable Steveson’s WWE run ends abruptly. Interesting to see what’s next for the Olympic gold medalist,” one person tweeted.

However, not every WWE fan appeared to be shocked by the choice.

“Gable Steveson getting released from WWE is the best news to wake up to this morning,” a different commenter wrote.

“The timing of the cut is especially cruel because had it been a few weeks earlier, he could have competed in the Olympic trials, which, based on his 2023 performance, he’d have been the heavy favorite,” Observer Figure Four Online wrote about wrestling.

“He would have been a favorite for either a gold or silver medal in the Olympics this summer had he done so, but it’s too late to make the U.S. team, as Parris will be the heavyweight,” they added.
